Understanding Dental Crowns & Porcelain Veneers

At Alexander Dentistry, we provide a wide range of dental services to ensure we can meet the needs of all of our patients and their unique smiles. Two common dental services that we provide are porcelain veneers and dental crowns. These two dental services are very similar, though they are also very different. To better help our patients understand these two services, here is some helpful information regarding crowns and veneers:

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dentistry solution. They are commonly utilized for patients hoping to achieve a complete smile makeover by concealing minor blemishes on their dental services. The veneers themselves are designed to be custom porcelain shells that are firmly attached to the front-facing portion of your tooth. They require only a small amount of enamel removal, making them a minimally invasive treatment option.

Patients looking to conceal bleach-resistant stains, small cracks, chips, or gaps in their teeth will find porcelain veneers to be the most beneficial. However, some dental damage may require more extensive care to restore the health of your natural tooth. That’s where dental crowns come in.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are considered a restorative dentistry solution. They are often recommended to patients who have suffered from extreme dental damage like large chips or cracks. If your natural tooth is severely damaged, a porcelain veneer may not be enough to restore your natural tooth’s functionality. With a dental crown, the affected tooth is shaved down to a foundational core which requires more enamel removal than a veneer.

The foundational core supports the dental crown as the dental crown replaces the entire exterior of the tooth. This allows patients to maintain the tooth root functionality of their natural teeth and avoid the need for a complete tooth extraction.
