That’s how it used to work. And in some offices, it still does. But same-day crowns have changed the game, and many patients never look back.

Traditional Crowns: The Two-Visit Process

With a traditional crown, the process takes two appointments, usually about two weeks apart.

  1. Dr. Alexander numbs the tooth, reshapes it to make room for the crown, and takes an impression. Before you leave, we fit you with a temporary crown to protect the tooth in the meantime.
  2. Your impression goes to an outside dental lab, where a technician crafts your custom crown.
  3. You come back, we remove the temporary, and cement the permanent crown in place.

The two-visit approach works well and produces excellent results. But it does mean two appointments, a temporary crown that can sometimes come loose, and a couple of weeks of watching what you eat.

Same-Day Crowns: One Visit, One Crown

Same-day crowns, sometimes called CEREC crowns, use advanced digital technology right in our office. Instead of mailing an impression to a lab, we design and mill your crown while you wait.

Here’s how it works:

  1. We numb the tooth and reshape it, just like with a traditional crown.
  2. Instead of goopy impression material, we take a digital scan of your tooth. It’s fast, comfortable, and highly accurate.
  3. Dr. Alexander designs your crown on a computer to match the shape, size, and shade of your natural teeth.
  4. A milling machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic, right there in the office.
  5. We fit the crown, make any fine adjustments, and cement it in place.

You could walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a fully restored one. No temporaries. No second appointment. And no waiting.

Both types of crowns can last for many years with good care. The best choice depends on your situation, your schedule, and what we’re treating.
