In this post, we will discuss some of the most asked questions about a widespread dental concern called cavities. Keeping our patients informed of the best practices to keep their smile healthy and functional is important to us!

How Do Cavities Form?

One of the most common dental concerns that patients deal with is cavities. When patients consume sugars and starches, it can mix with the bacteria in the mouth, causing tooth decay. Cavities form when the bacteria in plaque produce an acid that breaks down your tooth enamel (tooth decay). Over time, a hole will form (cavity) which will require Dr. Greenburg or Dr. Alexander to treat it to restore health back into your smile.

How Do I Avoid Cavities

Avoiding cavities can be simple. Patients need to maintain a healthy oral hygiene routine, regularly schedule visits to their dentist, and try to limit sugary treats and beverages. Other factors like smoking and tobacco use can contribute to the development of cavities. It is important your properly clean your teeth and gums every day to avoid plaque buildup. Visiting the dentist allows Dr. Greenburg and Dr. Alexander to carefully examine your mouth and check for any signs of dysfunction. If there are any signs of tooth decay, Dr. Alexander or Dr. Greenburg may recommend a sealant, dental filling, or another treatment to improve your smile.

What Happens If I Don’t Treat A Cavity?

If a cavity is not treated, the infection or bacteria can reach the pulp of your tooth. The pulp is the epicenter of your tooth nerves, and once it is infected, a root canal may no longer be an option. The tooth may need to be extracted. To avoid the need for extraction, patients should take care of their teeth and schedule regular visits to Alexander dentistry.
