Periodontal Therapy
Dr. Alexander performs periodontal therapy at his Jacksonville dental office. Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals mostly with the treatment and prevention of gum disease as well as the placement of dental implants.
Gum disease is a serious problem that affects an estimated 75% of the adult population. The key to healthy gums is having an established oral health routine which includes daily brushing and flossing combined with regular, professional dental cleanings and examinations.
The number one cause of tooth loss in adults is gum disease. Once a tooth is lost to gum disease, the options for replacing the tooth are often expensive and require multiple procedures. We strive to treat each patient with the most conservative treatment plan by identifying issues early and treating them to prevent future damage and problems.
If there is significant disease or damage to teeth, Dr. Alexander may recommend a tooth extraction. Most extractions can be performed in our office under the aid of nitrous oxide. For cases that can not be handled in our office, Dr. Alexander may recommend a periodontist or oral surgeon.
Causes & Symptoms of Gum Disease
Poor oral hygiene is just one cause of gum disease. Other causes may include:
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Genetic factors
- Pregnancy and hormonal changes in women
- Stress
- Medications
- Grinding or clenching of teeth
- Poor nutrition, obesity or disease such as diabetes
Gum disease is known as a “silent disease” because most patients don’t experience pain or obvious symptoms until the condition has progressed. Common signs of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen or sore gums
- Bleeding when brushing, flossing or eating
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
- Pus between gums and teeth
- Sores in the mouth
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Changes in the occlusion (bite) including changes in the fit of dentures
While tooth loss is a major concern in regards to gum disease, it can also contribute to a number of other serious health concerns including heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy related problems and more.
